Green and I were exhausted when we heard Silicon yelling for us. I'd almost wished that we hadn't done anything. However it was just an almost. I almost was prepared for his ridicule when Green kissed my neck, kissed my lips, and then slid into the water swimming upstream. That left me to look as if I had been sunbathing on the river bank when Silicon came to greet me.
"Echo! We've gotta go now! Get your ass in gear and go to the cave." He held his assault rifle in hand and rushed off in the thin woods down towards the trail to our cave. The Ridge, in comparison to the enemies compound, was a good 3 miles away in the opposite direction of our river. They would go to the river of course, but it was farther up north to it than where we were camping out. And with it being mostly desert out there, up on our ridge, we had no problem watching what they were doing. Our ridge also had a small cave under it where we kept the Humvee and trash from when someone would drive to the market for more supplies. Command rarely would give us anything, but would sometimes have a scout in the village waiting for us and we'd inform them on our progress while whomever's turn it was to shop was shopping. When Silicon came rushing I knew I had to make it there quick. So I slid back into the water to wash myself off, wash off Green, and then rushing from the water to put my clothes on, still somewhat wet. I picked up my weapons and headed down along the river and then down a lightly formed trail which led to a cave. I heard the engine of the Humvee already started up and Silicon shouting for me to hurry. I did, I rushed to them and hopped in, and got thrown into the back of my seat as Sky floored it, moving with purpose to the road. Silicon gave us tactical armor and masks with goggles and light helmets in case anything came close. We also did this so that no one would know our identities. And on the masks we put designs for fun. Mine had fangs on it, as did Ely's. Green's had a smirk and Silicon's design was a very creepy grin. Sky was the only one without such on it and we joked that it was because he had no humor. He didn't find that funny.
Ely was up top picking off stragglers with his fifty caliber rifle. That rifle tore limbs off and vaporized skulls. I could almost swear that I saw more heads vaporized than anything else. Have you ever seen a Fifty caliber round hit a human head? That's a frightening, yet oddly entertaining sight. Nothing was left. A damned good sniper he was. We needed to hit them hard and fast before they could even figure out what was going on. Ely made sure not to shoot too close to the compound and risk his bullet flying off elsewhere. Even though the rifle he was using was a good 1.5 miles past its effective range, he didn't waste a single bullet.
Our Humvee took small arms fire and everyone ducked down. Silicon was informing us on what they were doing while we rushed at them. They were making bombs. Not grenades and rifles like we had once thought, but guided missiles and bombs. We needed to hurry in and out. Shut down the compound and take their leader into custody. This mission was now even more dangerous and life threatening than we had thought. This was high risk and high reward. I clutched my assault rifle tightly as we made our way into the front of the compound. The shooting had ceased for the most part once we were inside. All except for Ely's fire on the enemy outside, which was a comforting noise as of now. We were cautious as of what to do. The enemy was closing in quick to our vehicle and we didn't have a way out. Until Green busted open the top hatch and laid down heavy fire on everyone in the compound. I don't know how he didn't detonate every explosive in there with his rapid firing but it got the job done. Sky in Silicon exited from the right side of the car which was close to the wall for cover, and I crawled over the seats and did the same. Green's screaming and cursing at them as he unloaded clip after clip into the opposing soldiers disoriented them for a second, which was all I needed. I rushed up the stairs to the office room that over looked the manufacturing and kicked down the door.
That's when I heard a rather large explosion. The room was wired to explode if any attempt was made to get in. The heat rushed over me as I was slammed into the railing. I had tried to jump out of the way in time but I wasn't quick enough. These people were reckless. Granted they used restraint in that trap or else this place would become a crater, but it was still a risky move all the same. I looked to everyone at the Humvee who in turn looked at me who had just been scorched, and it resulted in Green taking a round in his left shoulder. He slumped back down into the vehicle and I thought he was dead. I couldn't tell what had hit him. Was he dead? Did they nick an artery? Oh please no. Please please please no. I struggled to my feet as cars and people rushed from the building and out onto the road. Almost everyone in the compound was dead except for the few escapees, and that's when I saw the truck they'd said earlier had come in with the leader. It was leaving.
I tried hard. Believe me I did try hard to get to my feet but the ash that covered my goggles was all but impossible to see out of and my head was throbbing from the force of the explosion. My mask was scorched and I could feel the light burns on my face. The worst of all however was the breath. I had none. I couldn't breath as I raised my rifle and I wasn't even sure if I had enough energy to pull the trigger. I did though. I pulled it and my round went through the tires and up the glass. It was bullet resistant of which I was glad because I didn't want their leader dead. After all this was a kidnapping for interrogation. All would be void if he were dead.
That's when I knew something was wrong. The world seemed darker. Darker than how the ash and heat from the explosion affected my goggles. Much darker. I felt light and dizzy and collapsed at the top of the stairs. I fell down to the second platform where the stairs curved off and stayed there for a while. I guess they all thought I was dead by that point and the remaining enemies focused fire on Sky and Silicon. I had to try something. Anything. I tilted my head to look out the large opening of the compound which was the front. It worked. The car was tipped over on it's side and I saw people climbing out of it. We had a chance. Sky and Silicon just needed to leave. Go. Go! With every bit of my willpower and strength I screamed for them to go, but it only came out as a horse whisper. Then everything went dark. The noises started to fade and everything seemed to disappear.
