Freddie: We'd be good together. Don't you think?
Effy: No.
Freddie: Why?
Effy: Because I'll break your heart.
Freddie: Maybe I'll break yours.Effy: Nobody breaks my heart and anyway, why would I want that?
This is quoted from a web site were I posted a Goth Rock/ Death Rock thread. You have little clue on what Goth Rock is and base it on "dark" lyrics. This is what it is. Please Read.
Goth Rock and Death Rock are pretty much siblings. They belong in the same kind of zone but Death Rock is the American version, while Goth Rock is more British/ America. Goth Rock started in the early 80s when Punk Bands began to experiment with sound. Bands like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees were consider the first wave of Goth Rock also known as Proto Goth. Latter on a second wave appeared with bands like Sisters of Mercy and Gene Loves Jezebel. The second wave of Goth is what defines most Modern Goth Rock with deep vocals and very bass driven (taken from my friend lol).
Death Rock is pretty much a form of Goth Rock. Started in LA it was first truly heard from bands like Christian Death (80s/ Rozz Williams) and 45 Grave (who can also be classes as Horror Punk). Much of these Death Rock bands are heavily influence by the punk scene. The vocals can be more punky then Second Wave Goth. Death Rock is more associated with Punk Rock then Goth Rock today.
What is not Goth?
This is were I get into a little arguments with people. Goth is not about what you wear, what you are thinking, how depressed you are, what is your mind set, how dark your soul is etc... It is about the style of music you listen to. To be classified as a "Goth", you have to actually listen to Goth Rock. It really is not hard. You can dress pretty average but if you have a fundamental understanding of Goth Rock and listen to it, you can consider yourself Goth. People use the term as an umbrella term but it is a word, therefore it has a definition. Though there is a historical meaning to it, but that is not for this thread. lol
Bands consider Goth but are NOT Goth
-My Chemical Romance
-The 69 Eyes
-Marilyn Manson
-Slip Knot
-Any Metal... Metal is not GOTH. There is Gothic Metal, but that is different. Not influence by Goth Rock (Though Type O Negative is a different story).

Great post Nymph but I don't agree that goth is all about the music. To me it is a state of the mind. I enjoy going to gothic parties, listening to gothic music etc...but I listen to other styles too, to any actually.
Anyway I've got many favorite bands, but the one I like the most is The sins of thy beloved, even though recently I haven't listened to it, because I wanted to discover more bands.
It seems the gothic scene is liked by a number of people here, I am glad![]()
chips or crisps?
That is the issue. If it was a state of mind then there is no point of the term "Goth". You can like other things, it is not about what you like at all. Goth Rock is a form of a music and the term Goth comes from that. It does have a style of fashion (to a degree) but the main part of being a Goth is about the music. Just like being a Metalhead means you listen to Metal.
This is more about the music... So lets stick to that. Goth Rock does have a sound and it is not up to an opinion on what that sound is. If everything was based on opinion, we would not have definitions.
I am a Goth but I like other things as well. Goth to me is about the music and nothing more. I learned that over the years. I read a lot on it and can really clearly understand were the term has come from. Every Goth I have talk to has stated that it is about the music.

Oh well to each his own, I don't label myself anything anyway, so couldn't really careless, but indeed the modern term came from the music, later on fashion too.
However there are others things which can be goth like buildings and art for example.
And let's not forget that in history there were the visigoths and the astrogoths, so the term came even before.
Oh well since the thread is about the music my final comment would be, there is nothing better than a gothic party, I always enjoyed myself when I went to one, it's a pity there are no gothic clubs in my country, but at least gothic parties get organised about twice a year and uausally they are a blast even though people who are into this sub-culture are very few in my country.
chips or crisps?
Yeah it is about the music. ^^
Does anyone know about The Bat Cave?
Though it was not all goth rock music, it was still an influence. They even claim it to be an actual style of music. I do not agree with that but it make sense.

I only like a tiny bit of goth. Too much is bad for me.
