Chapter 1: The Good ole days
Asaigo was a German sheperd with black and brown ears at the top of his head amongst his straight soft brown hair. His tail was black and his eyes were black as well. He was 5ft.10in. high and had a well toned body from many days of farm work.Asaigo was about 21 years old(in human years of course being that he isn't fully dog,he doesn't age like them) He was the pet of a middle aged couple that lived in the country. They were referred to as Mr. Gray and Mrs.Gray. Mr. Gray had bought Asaigo when he was just a mere puppy (4 years old at the time)for his wife's birthday,so they were all very close. The three lived in a little red bricked house with lot's of land on all sides of them and a dirt road leading to the town. Mr. Gray was a farmer and a successful one at that. He was always growing a different type of crop for each season and from many years of practice, he always had a good harvest to sell. With this success, the Gray family had a very comfortable life style.
Asaigo loved his life very much. Everyday,he rose when the sun rose and woke Mr.Gray, helping him with obtaining his robe and slippers if he was too groggy to find them. Then while following Mr.Gray around the farm, he woke the other animals, gently nudging their faces and setting their breakfast with Mr. Gray. Then would be carrying things around for Mr. Gray. Whether it was food bags, wood planks,or his hat,Asaigo was ready to help. Once the farm duties were completed,The two would head inside for a well made dinner from Mrs. Gray. Asaigo loved her cooking more than air truly. He felt that he could always work so long as she would cook him dinner every night. And then after a good dinner,he would help her clean and curl by her feet as she pet his shaggy head while her husband smoked his pipe and read a book.
Asaigo was a lover of silence. He loved peace and anything that included relaxing or being pet. He wasn't much for playing, getting all his excercise from work around the farm, and wasn't very outgoing. He liked those that he knew and was indifferent to strangers. A bird would stop by to kindly say hello during it's long flight of migration and he would shun it as if there was no one there. He admitted he had some major social issues, but did not feel they needed any fixing. Whoever was a part of his regular everyday life was his family. Anyone else could as well have died and he wouldn't shed a tear for anyone of them.

Chapter 2: The day it all ended
Asaigo laid at Mrs. Gray's feet after a long day of caring for the animals. He watched the door from his spot on the rug, awaiting Mr. gray's return from the town. He was supposed to be bringing his buyers their produce today, which meant big bucks for the Gray family and that meant a big yummy bone for Asaigo to chew on. His tail thumped the floor everytime he was stroked along his back by Mrs. Gray and he yawned once in awhile, stretching his beautiful body and flexing those rock hard muscles.
Where is he? What could be taking him so long long? Maybe the store ran out of bones? No. He wouldn't take this long to find another one. What if he was hurt in a car accident or something? What if he got mugged while he was shopping? What if he's dead? He thought and whined nervously, only to receive more gentle strokes on his back from Mrs. Gray.
"Don't worry Asaigo. He's okay. The man gets easily distracted,he might be stuck in a store or something like that. Relax."she said and covered him with a handmade knitted blanket. "You just rest. You wear yourself out everyday outside as it is."she said and rubbed his cheek. "And look at how tanned you are. I need to buy a stronger sun block for you boy. You'll be as brown as your own air."she said and laughed in her own charming little way. He smiled at her and kissed her hand.Asaigo relaxed as he snuggled with the warm blanket and soon slipped into the abyss.
Awhile later,he was woken when his flesh was suddenly exposed to the cold air inside the house as the blanket was whipped away from him. He sat up startled and noticed that Mr. Gray was standing in the doorway. He got up and excitedly ran over to him.
"Welcome home Sir!"he said, for that is how he always greeted his master.
"Happy to be home my boy."Mr.Gray said, sounding much more fatherly to the German sheperd than masterly. He hugged him from the side so as not to make the groceries fall from his arms. As Mrs. Gray took away the groceries, Asaigo noticed his blanket from Mrs. Gray was thrown over box thingy and was covering it's contents. It was a large sized box so Asaigo felt fearful that Mr. Gray could not sell some of his produce. He could smell something like newspaper and...could it be? He could smell his favorite bone in that box! He smelt the beef flavored bone and wagged his tail excitedly.
"Sir?Sir? Is there a bone for me?"he asked excitedly and got on his hands and knees infront if it.
"Um,well I wouldn't say that now. It's something even better..Asaigo..."he said and smiled at Asaigo."You know I love you very much right?" Asaigo was nodding excited at what could be better than bones. "Well,I've been putting aside a certain amount of money for when the moment was right and my boy, the produce sold spectacularly. So today I went out and did it."he said and removed the blanket from the container it was covering. Asaigo's tail wagged and then his whole body froze. What he was looking at was a cage. And what he saw inside the cage was even worse. A small puppy sleeping inside a nest of shredded newspaper and the object he was hugging so close to his body while he slept was...................................... Asaigo's favorite bone.
Chapter 3: Unwanted
He sat in the cage, naked as all the puppies were, staring desperatley at the spaces between those metal bars, wishing they would expand wider, just so that he could only fit his head through. That little bit of opening would be enough freedom for him. Kirri,a 14 year old Bijon frise , with white curly hair and a white curly little tail, and frosty blue eyes. He was only $1,000 due to his age and his damaged foot. Though even when the price was so low, nobody wanted the cute but crippled creature. Even though, compared to the other puppies, his skin was the fairest, his cheeks were the rosiest, and his hair was the softest,he would not sell. It was simple really. No one wanted a crippled dog. The mere thought of walking around with him in public, with that twisted foot of his, made people wrinkle their noses in disgust. Kirri had been there for so long, the owners were thinking of just putting him down.He never sold,he dirtied his cage, and he ate food purchased by the store. If he was only going to eat their money, they found no sense in keeping him any longer. Kirri was unaware of this fact, for he still knew no human language due to not having the master to teach him. He would whine when he messed his cage(since the employees of the pet shop would be too embarrased to walk him),he would bark when a customer came in,and whimper when his foot was hurting him or he was sick. But he was never freed from that cage for more than a half hour a week.
Kirri longed for freedom and the chance to be wanted. He had seen many puppies go off to far away places with their new families and wished he had a family. Nothing was consistent, not even his toys. There was nothing he could attach himself to,no one he could later remember in his life, nothing but the steel bars that kept him locked away. Even though he was held in there so he would have a place to stay and not run away,Kirri felt that his cage was a prison to lock away a freak like him.He knew little but one thing. He was a freak. He even felt like a freak.Kirri hated his foot because he knew that was why no one wanted him.It was the source of his freakness. The other puppies had told him so. Despite being no older than 14,he believed with all his heart,he would never be wanted by anyone.
It was late at night when that farmer who smelt like fresh dirt walked into the pet shop, his smile bright and cheery, his fist clenching a wallet tightly. Kirri was nuturing his aching foot, which had again been neglected, when he saw the man walk in. He smiled gently at how wonderful of a man the farmer appeared. Kirri found himself secretly wishing to be the lucky dog that would be going home with him tonight, despite his knowledge that he would never be chosen. He laid in his cage and watched the man looking around the store at pet supplies. Maybe he already had a dog? Kirri thought and was jealous at the dog who belonged to this farmer. He lost sight of him an sighed. He waited to see the farmer again and smiled sadly when he saw the man suddenly up infront of the glass window to the left of him. So he was buying adog. Kirri pushed the thought that he'd be chosen to the back of his mind until he saw them man move directly infront of his cage and call the owner over. As he waited,he looked at Kirri happily and Kirri looked back at him sort of stuck in a trance. The look was exchanged for only a minute, though for Kirri it seemed it had lasted for hours. He was suddenly startled when the owner came into the room of cages and opened his! Kirri was pulled out of his cage, despite his frantic movements to be released from the owner's hold and he was carried to the counter for the customer to inspect. Kirri sat on the glass counter, his heart beating a mile a minute.
'This isn't real? Am I actually leaving? Will he choose me?' he thought and looked nervously between the two men discussing the pup's condition. When he saw the man's eyes drop to his foot he frowned and moved it out of sight, ashamed of his deformity.'There goes that.'he thought and his ears visibly drooped.
The farmer put a gentle hand on his head and rubbed his head soothingly. Before Kirri knew what was happening, he was thrown into a cage with newspaper bedding and given a nice smelling beef bone. He barked happily and watched through the cage holes as the image of the petshop was finally behind him. He was loaded into a pick up truck and was supplied with the feeling of fresh air rushing through the holes in his cage as they began to leave. He fell asleep on the way there, hugging the only present he had ever been given close.
And then he woke up and found an older dog staring in at him. He was abit frightened to move, but then again,he had never seen an older dog before. He got up and crawled to the front of the cage and smiled. The other dog was handsome to Kirri. He barked and tried to push open the cage door with his frail hands, but was kept in. The other dog frowned.
"How old are you?"the older dog asked in dog language
"I am fourteen. How old are you?"Kirri asked sweetly. The older dog seemed to look distastefully at Kirri and huffed.
"Twenty-one."he said and moved away from the cage as it was rolled over to near the fireplace for Kirri to warm up after such a cold drive.
"What's his name boy?He doesn't speak any English yet."Mr. Gray said.
"My master, Mr.Gray,or Sir to you, wants to know your name."
"I am Kirri.What's yours?"
"Asaigo."
"It's nice to meet you Asaigo.Your are very pretty to look at."he said, not having much social skills so saying whatever came into his head. Asaigo scowled and truned away from him and walked to his master.
"His name is Kirri. He's fourteen years old sir.Why did you have to buy him?"he said in a kind of hurt voice.
"Hey now Asaigo, you need a friend other than me and the missus. I know you like the farm animals, but dontcha think you'd be better off with another dog in the house? He'd be better off with us too.You aren't the only one who needs me around the house,eh?He's going to be a good boy. You could teach him how to run the farm and help with the farm duties okay?"he said and tried making it sound like a good idea. Though,Asaigo shook his head frantically. "Aw,you'll like him.And you'll be thanking me for bringing the damn pup home. You hear?"he said and went to his room to undress from his working clothes and get into bed finally. This left Asaigo and the caged puppy. Kirri pressed his cheek to the cage and looked at Asaigo fondly.
"Psst! Asaigo? When can I get out of this cage hm? Hm?"he asked and curled his fingers around each bar. Asaigo turned and looked at him annoyed and growled.
"You can't get out of that cage yet. We're taking you back to the pet shop tomorrow."he said and left Kirri to sleep in his bed.Kirri was quiet the rest of the night, alone again, and crying until he passed out.
Chapter 4: You can't take my place
The next day,he was woken by the squeaking of his cage door. He wiped his face with the back of his hand and wagged his curly tail. He was lifted out of the cage and carried by the farmer. It was still dark outside but the sun was just about to rise. Kirri whimpered and wrapped his arms around him, thinking he was going to let him go and he put his face on his shoulder. The farmer smiled and rubbed his back.
"There there boy. It's alright now. I won't put you down.I wanna show you the farm."he said gently and pet his head.Kirri ceased his whimpering and raised his head curiously. He had no idea what the man was saying, but he liked being pet. They walked around the farm, waking the animals and introducing everyone of them to Kirri. He was excited seeing the animals and feeling happy when they said good morning to which he barked good morning back. The farmer smiled at how eager Kirri looked to see each animal and touch them. His little tail was wagging so hard, you'd swear he was going to fly away like a little helicopter.
While all this was happening, Asaigo watched from afar, hatred in his eyes for the Bijon puppy. He had risen to wake Mr. Gray as usual, but had found that the farmer had aready risen. He later found him in the back yard showing the new puppy the friendly sheep and followed them the rest of the way around. While Kirri was watching a beautiful bird flap his wings for him,he smelt Asaigo and wriggled from the farmer's hold and dropped to the floor with a painful yelp.
"Asaigo!"he barked and startled Asaigo. When Asaigo saw the pup on the floor looking directly at him he ran from th pup,who was hobbling to him,but Asaigo disappeared. Kirri pouted and got lifted once again by the farmer.
"Don't go hurting that little foot o' yours okay?'he said and rubbed the foot carefully so as not to make the pain worse. Kirri giggled and kissed the farmer's cheek.
Later on he tried to find Asaigo, but instead found himself being made a special lunch to "plump him up" as Mrs. Gray said. When Asaigo came in from working and he found Kirri curled up and snoring on Mrs. Gray's lap,who was asleep as well,he growled and left to the pond to swim and wash his shorts.
Kirri had,in Asaigo's eyes taken the couple away from him and had taken his place. He didn't want to have anything to do with that dog. Though,Kirri continued to try and hang out with Asaigo. He felt bad that he caused Asaigo so much discomfort. He thought, maybe it was his foot that drove Asaigo away.
One night,Kiri made it his business to sneak around and find Asaigo. When he did,he found him laying on a cozy looking bed in the house's basement which was pretty as the rest of the house. He barked and got his attention. He held the precious beef bone(which had not been chewed since Kirri valued it so greatly) in one hand and had a determined face on.Asaigo frowned.
"What do you want with me pup?"he said annoyed by his very presence.Kirri smiled.
"I.....ah....sorry."he said in human. He was slowly picking up words of human and so he could say a few sentences abit well.Asaigo was about to make a snide remark about his pathetic human speech, until Kirri started to walk towards him,the beef bone outstretched in his hand. Kirri was determined to give it to him, despite how badly he walked and was willing to be made fun of for it,just to offer the bone as a friendship request. But Asaigo couldn't look at the bone at the moment. He stared in at the puppy's face, into his eyes. He was crying from the pain of walking so strangely down stairs but was still tryig to reach him. The way he struggled to use his foot without falling face forward on the floor. It was pathetic but made Asaigo realize the error of his ways. Mr. Grays words came back to him. He had not meant that they were bored with him. He was talking about Kirri's condition which was not so well. He looked up at the hobbling pup with absolute guilt and saw his reddened face as he finally made it to Asaigi. He was panting and grinning. He handed the bone to Asaigi, only to have his whole arm pulled down and he was suddenly in Asaigi's arms. He blushed and looked up at the older dog. "I am sorry."he said to him in human and Kirri nodded because he knew what it meant, not why he had said it.
Chapter 5: Kindness
Mr. Gray sat in his arm chair reading his book. He went to pet Asaigo out of habit, but was confused when he didn't feel the dog there. He looked at th floor then his wife, who was knitting.
"Honey? Where's the dogs?"he asked her. She looked up from her knitting and nodded her head towards the window.
"Asaigo took the little one out for a walk.Last saw them saying hello to the cows." she said and smiled. "I really am proud of that Asaigo. I didn't think he would take to Kirri much. He never met another dog before, let alone a puppy." Mr. Gray puffed his pipe and grinned.
"I knew my boy wouldn't let me down. He's a good boy. One of kind."he said and relaxed in his armchair.
Meanwhile,Asaigo had taken Kirri to the duck pond. They were currently biting on the ends of some duck ---- while watching the mother and her four children. She quacked to them and they waved back,Kirri watching excitedly as her children all mimiced her and giggled. Asaigo was watching Kirri instead of the ducks. He could feel nothing but guilt as he stared at the young pup.
'I'm sorry.' Was that all he could say to him? Was there nothing he could do for him? His mind was trying to come up with some kind of answer, but Asaigo's previous treatment of Kirri made him just feel ashamed. Kirri held Asaigo's hand and smiled.
"Don't look so sad Asaigo. You are pretty when you are happy, like before."he said and blushed. "I don't want you to feel sad, especially if it's about my foot."he said with a pouty face. "I have had enough people look at me in that way.I want to see new things in my new home."he said and looked away. "I've never had any friends before. You could be my friend maybe."
"I could be your friend."he agreed and rubbed Kirri's hand with his thumb. Kirri looked down at his hand, his cheeks with a pinkish tint forming on them.Kirri giggled.
"I would like that very much thankyou."he said and wagged his tail.Asaigo looked away and nodded. He felt embarrassed when Kirri looked like that. He was....cute? Asaigo got up and Kirri did too.
"Let's go eat something."Asaigo said.Kirri nodded and hobbled beside him. Asaigo watched him and then stopped. He put an arm around his waist and made Kirri lean on him. "So walking won't wear you out as much."he said, trying to sound like his kind deed wasn't anything big. Kirri looked at him curiously, but then nodded and looked ahead of him.Asaigo opened the door for him and was greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Gray. Asaigo backed up,slightly wierded out by the way they were looking at the two.
"Had a nice walk boys?"Mr.Gray asked. Asaigo looked at him with one brow arched..
"Yes.thankyou for asking."he said and led Kirri to the table where he took two paper towels and set them on the floor where he and Kirri would eat. Mrs. Gray set two plates on the floor for them.
"It's beef stew with yam pieces.Eat up boys."she said smiling dow at them as she handed them spoons.Asaigo smiled at her.
"Thankyou ma'am."he said and began to eat. Kirri looked at the food confused. It wasn't the puppy kibble he had been fed for years in the pet shop. Asaigo noticed his confusion and touched his shoulder. "Eat up.It's good. She makes us food like this all the time."he said and ate some more. "See?Good." he said and watched Kirri. Kirri looked at him and smiled.Again,Asaigo felt embarrassed by this act of cuteness and looked away.
Kirri sniffed the plate an put his hands in it,scooping up the hot stew, hunger overpowering the immense pain.He ate it out of his hands and sniffled as he licked his hands clean. Asaigo winced when he saw the burnt hands. They looked red and swollen. Mrs. Gray gasped and ran off to get a cool towel. She gave him it and Asaigo wrapped Kirri's hands in it. He then lifted the spoon "Spoon."he said in human."Spoon."he repeated so Kirri would understand what it was and it's human name too. He then touched Kirri's chin. "Open up."he said and Kirri obeyed, watching curiously. He blew on the stew so that it wasn't too hot. He then fed it to Kirri, who licked it off the spoon and smiled.
"Good."he said in human after swallowing. Kirri wagged his tail excitedly and opened his mouth for more as Asaigo fed him. Asaigo smiled softly as he fed Kirri. He didn't think it would feel so good to be needed like this. Sure, the farmer usually needed him to lift things, but this type of need was different for Asaigo. While he was thinking he made a mess on Kirri's cheek and only realised it when he heard Kirri whine because he couldn't reach it with his tounge. Asaigo moved on instinct and lifted Kirri's face and licked the bit of stew off the puppy's cheek. Kirri blushed and smiled, liking this attention from Asaigo. Asaigo on the other hand froze when he realised what he'd just done and moved his face away from Kirri's. He did not want to seem like a pervert to the puppy or to the farmer and his wife. "Good."Kirri said softly, touching the wet spot where Asaigo licked him. Asaigo's ears went down and he bowed his head.
"I'm sorry for acting in such a way. It was not good of me to do that."he said and resumed feeding Kirri. Kirri looked at him worriedly. He had liked Asaigo licking his cheek. Why would it be bad? Kirri continued to eat, watching Asaigo closely all the while. When Asaigo finished feeding him,he ate his own food and kissed Mrs. gray's hand. "Thankyou Ma'am.The food was delicious. Would you like any help with anything?"he asked, not knowing that Kirri was still watching him closely. Mrs. Gray shook her head.
"No dear. Everything is taken care of thankyou.Go play with Kirri. He looks really lonely over there."she said and pet his head. Asaigo nodded and went to Kirri, lifting him.
"What are we doing now Asaigo kun?"Kirri asked and put his hands against Asaigo's cheek.Asaigo frowned and moved his face away.
"What are you doing that for?"he asked as he sat down by the fire place and laid Kirri down on the soft rug.
"My hands feel better. So I can feel your face."he said smiling and sighed when he felt the warmth of the fire on his back.He growled happily.Asaigo was blushing terribly and now looked at the cute puppy desprate to be close to him,but too shy and too unsure about what he felt for Kirri to really feel comfortable doing that. He laid a few inches away from Kirri and relaxed. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.
Kirri watched him, still very curious about his friend's reactions to him. He could see that he was blushing and really,he thought it was adorable on him. Kirri crawled closer and pressed himself close to Asaigo's body. He giggled abit.Asaigo opened his eyes and looked at him, surprised.
"Kirri?Kirri?What are you doing?"he asked.
"I wanna snuggle."he said softly and licked his arm as he got cozy.Asaigo looked nervously, but he had to admit. Kirri made it more cozy,so he put his arms around him and snuggled happily.Sleeping like that really did feel good.
Mr.Gray and Mrs.Gray watched from the kitchen. They both sighed and Mrs.Gray held a hand over her heart.
"They are just so sweet together honey.I can't help but sigh when I see them."she said and being the hopeless romantic she was,she hugged her husband. "I haven't seen anything so cute as that before." Mr. Gray nodded.
"Yeah. I have to agree with you. They are pretty sweet looking. But you know,I think Asaigo might have to watch what waters he's testing. I don' know what I'll do if he falls for the pup. He's a good boy,but that puppy is still too young to be his mate.I can't allow him to fall in love with Kirri."he said and patted his wife's arm.
"Yeah, well you can't control who it is you love now can you?"she said and kissed her husband on the head. "Goodnight dear."she said and went off to bed.
