The basis of the show is explained
And now, my honest OPINION:
I really don't like it.
After watching a few episodes, I felt it was some sort of weak attempt at combining popular (either current or past) anime in the hopes of making a super popular anime. I'm not saying it's not possible, but Bakugan fails at such an attempt.
Bakugan has a lot of similarities to other anime, making me think the show was made in an attempt to just be popular and not really try to accomplish anything extraordinary.
Such anime:
~Yugioh- they use "ability cards" to power up their Bakugan, much like a magic card does for a monster
~Beyblade- they eventully acquire Bakugan launchers, which really don't seem to serve that much of a purpose. Changing the speed of throwing them on the feild doesn't affect anything, where as in Beyblade, speed is a big factor.
~Digimon- they eventually go to Vistoria and walk around battling other Bakugan for several episodes.
~Pokemon- creatures battling other creatures, the humans deciding the best means of attacks.
Furthermore, the characters seem to fit the typical standards. Other than Alice, you can pretty much take everyone based on face value, quite literally (and then, after a certain point, Alice is pretty transparent). Shun, for example, looks like a ninja (i.e. mysterious)... because he studies as one.
My mother watched one episode (yes, she watches anime as well and has been even longer than I have) and felt the story of just cards falling from the sky wasn't well written, and thought the actual battle sequences, when showing the power levels, was too destracting to who ever this show is aimed.
And, unless I just missed that episode, the rules of the game are never clearly explained (unlike YuGiOh, whose converstion is mostly game explaination) nor are the origins of the cards, other than that they 'randomly fell from the sky,' ever really revealed either.
Also, is the fact that no adults saw these cards falling a little odd? Odder still is that a bunch of junior high kids managed to organized this game for world wide use, right down to a ranking system, without any adults really knowing any of this is happening (and the only one that did know turned out to be evil... no, not evil, just the bad guy).
"New Vistoria" is even odder. Persumbly the second season, Vistoria is invaded by the Vistles (no, I'm not going to see if I spelled that right). They seem more advanced than Humans, but what they are is never revealed (aliens? alternate humans? we never know from just watching alone).
The only thing that is certain is that the Vistles enjoy dressing up extravagantly. I will admit that Spectra (who I really want to call Spectrum for some reason) has a really kick ass outfit.
The cast of Vistles is like the main cast, taken pretty much at face value- there's the crazy one, the loyal servant, the traitor, etc, etc. The fact that Mira only goes back to Spectra to help the Resistance is pretty evident as well, though her bout of emoness wasn't really annoying and pretty understandable ('my brother is evil').
The plot for both seasons is the same-both involve the wanting of power and becoming/ wanting the ultiment Bakugan, either by taking the various Cores of Vistoria or becoming a hybrid of Bakugan and machine.
This, of course, is my personal opinion based on watching other anime and the show itself.
So, what do you think of Bakugan? An honest attempt at trying something new, or just a failed hope of wanting to simply be popular?
For all we know, Japan is laughing at us and how easily we're entertained.
