You're doing it wrong!
I saw somebody building a circuit that was attached to no power source. The student was very frustrated and asked me why there was no voltage through his circuit, as he carried it across the room, attached to nothing (no power supply). I asked him where he thought voltage came from and he told me from resistors... "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!"
